9/11/01, Poconos, PA: Up bright and early with my daughter who was 2 at the time, cuddling in bed watching Blue’s Clues.
I get a phone call from my mother who was loud and nervous on the phone…she tells me “turn on CNN! The World Trade got bombed again!” I simply turned to the channel and all I could think about was we had JUST left Brooklyn from our mini summer vacation, and we left a few days early so I could get rest to start my new position and resume college.
I remember saying “ah c’mon what else is new” but something didn’t look right about the buildings. That’s when the journalist confirmed to me it wasn’t a bombing. I was watching the live scene as if I was watching a movie I didn’t want to see but was forced to.
I tried calling folk I knew either lived or worked near there but the NY phone lines were all tied up.
God spared my daughter and me from any danger that day by having us leave the NYC area early, but unfortunately some of my friends are no longer here as a result of that attack.
Furthermore, some of my friends who were there and their lives spared have to either live with that vision or horrific experience forever cemented in their minds.
Definitely a day I will #NeverForget…and we shouldn’t either.
